Course overview and goals

This course is for students who have intermediate Level German language skills. Students will read various German texts and practically learn how to read advanced sentences. The main focus of the class is to develop the skill for reading German, and thinking in German. By understanding various texts, students will deepen their comprehensive knowledge of German-speaking culture and history.

Class flow

Text materials (created by the instructor) will be send to students through T2schola each time the day before class. (The content of the text is German sentences and notes about grammar and vocabulary.) Students will listen to the commentary in class, translate German sentences into Japanese, and submit a Japanese translation by T2schola. The next material will show you an example of translation. In the class, the instructor will explain the points of reading and consider the substance of the text together.

Class 2 “Enttäuschung” by Thomas Mann(1) Text materials (including assignments) created by the instructor will be sent to students through T2schola before each class. Please submit your assignments at T2schola by the next day of each class.
Class 3 Reading Mann’s novella(2) Text materials (including assignments) created by the instructor will be sent to students through T2schola before each class. Please submit your assignments at T2schola by the next day of each class.
Class 4 Reading Mann’s novella(3) Text materials (including assignments) created by the instructor will be sent to students through T2schola before each class. Please submit your assignments at T2schola by the next day of each class.
Class 5 Reading Mann’s novella(4) Text materials (including assignments) created by the instructor will be sent to students through T2schola before each class. Please submit your assignments at T2schola by the next day of each class.
Class 6 Reading Mann’s novella(5) Text materials (including assignments) created by the instructor will be sent to students through T2schola before each class. Please submit your assignments at T2schola by the next day of each class.

Study advice (preparation and review)

Revise the German grammar using your grammar book and German-Japanese dictionary.

Textbook(s)

The text of the teaching materials created by the instructor will be sent through T2schola each time on the day before class.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

When you read the German-Japanese dictionary, please keep an eye on all example sentences.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Based on all submissions, the instructor will evaluate the accuracy of students' translations and reading comprehension. Students should translate German sentences into Japanese and submit them.
