Syllabus

Course overview and goals

In this class students will learn about Japan’s situation moving towards an increasingly multicultural society. Students will also learn what a “diverse society” is, and what is needed to live in such a society.
Cases in other countries with various cultures, ethnics and religions will also be covered. This class also aims on gaining abilities to communicate with people with different backgrounds and culture by working in groups and discussing, using concept and methodology of cross-cultural communication.

Course description and aims

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the situation of multiculturalism in Japan, raise and analyze issues.
2) Build a diversity understanding attitude and coexist with people from different cultures.

Class flow

A question regarding the topic of the day will be provided. Students will work on it individually or in a group, followed by lecture, discussions and exercise problems.

Class 1 Multiculturalism in the community (1) Understand cases in the community and study about other cases.
Class 2 Multiculturalism in the community (2) Change the way of viewing - disability studies Understand cases of a person with disabilities in Japanese community.
Class 3 Consideration on the campus for multilingual and multicultural diversity - case study of international students Find out the situation of multiculturalism in Japan in your own perspective.
Class 4 Case study of a multiethnic and religiously diverse nation - ethnic and religious diversity Consider approaches for ethnic and religious diversity.
Class 5 How prejudice is formed, and understanding diversity (1) Understand how prejudice is formed and recall your own experience.
Class 6 Multilingualization and simple Japanese Understand and write simple Japanese.
Class 7 Workshop and presentation – Social and Cultural Diversity Prepare for presentation.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Assessment will be based on assignment, group presentation, poster and term paper.
