Course overview and goals

【abstract】 This course is placed as the advanced course of Metallurgical Engineering Laboratory I. Students will propose advanced design of previous product and realize its final form. The most valuable award is given for the student who is selected by all the students and staff related to this class.
【object】 Students will achieve ability to find and solve the problems after evaluation meeting held after the final presentation. Several students will have the opportunity to make English presentation at AOTULE after selection meeting by staff members.

Course description and aims

The aim of this course is to understand characteristics of metallic materials and their practical usages in daily life. By constructing structural and functional products associated with music instrument, equipment, transportation, students will experience the relationship between material selection and functionality of metal. Through this course, student will achieve originality, creativity and planning ability.

Student will;
understand characteristics of metal
propose a product related to metal, e.g. equipment associated with audio, electricity, transportation, etc.
design a structure of product by schematic and exact drawings
be able to use tools for cutting and drilling
acquire creativity, communication skills and a sense of accomplishment

Class flow

Group members will work on product design, material processing, construction of components.
Products are evaluated by staff and students on the date of the final presentation.

Class 1 General introduction and grouping to select a impressive theme
Class 2 Evaluation of previous works I (evaluation and testing) students evaluate products made during previous quater.
Class 3 Evaluation of previous works II (problem extraction) to find the technical problems in previous products for improvement of final product.
Class 4 Investigation of future design and related technical issues to make schematic of final product and estimate necessary process for it.
Class 5 Product design to discuss and decide the candidate of a final product by group members.
Class 6 Product making (cutting of materials) to estimate correct length of parts and cut from base materials.
Class 7 Product making (processing of components) to make processing (cutting, drilling, etc.)
Class 8 product making (construction of components) to make component by parts
Class 9 Product making (installation of components) to install components to main product
Class 10 Product making (evaluation and adjustment) to test functions and its durability of components of product.
Class 11 Product making (decoration of product) to keep consistency between functions and docoration of components.
Class 12 Product making (coating and painting) to take care of and uniform spray coating
Class 13 Final presentation I : high performance battery, music box to make effective presentation about a product with cooperation of group members.
Class 14 Final presentation II : Prototype frame car to make effective presentation about a product with cooperation of group members.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 50 minutes preparing for class and another 50 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Achievement will be evaluated by presentation, report, performance of product, cooperativeness with group members, etc.
