授業の目的（ねらい）、概要

英語第五に引き続き、この授業科目では、大学レベルでの学修・研究活動を英語で行うために必要な英語運用力のいっそうの向上を目的とした演習を行う。国際意識の醸成に資する目的で海外事情・異文化理解に関する教材を用いるほか、科学技術に関する英語素材を用いる。英語の読解力と聴解力の向上を目指す訓練に加え、口頭の発話練習および構成を考えながらパラグラフや短いエッセイを書く訓練を行うことによって、英語での発信に習熟することも目指す。

到達目標

この授業科目では、次のような英語の知識と運用力およびコミュニケーションへの姿勢を身につけることが目標となる。
・英語で自己表現する力がつく
・パラグラフや短いエッセイを書く力がつく
・英語の講義を理解する聴解力がつく
・英文を読みこなすための方法が身につく

This course will be taught by a bilingual journalist who has been reporting and writing in both English and Japanese on a wide range of issues for a variety of publications. Throughout the course, the instructor will use her knowledge and expertise in the art of storytelling, to help students acquire communication skills that are necessary for communicating ideas effectively and clearly in English to people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

授業の進め方

We will continue to explore various issues using the textbook, "Life Third Edition 4A," National Geographic Learning. Each week, students are expected to study the assigned unit and come to class fully prepared for discussion. In addition to developing their listening and speaking skills, students will acquire basic skills that are essential for delivering effective presentations. The class is highly interactive, therefore students' strong commitment and active participation are the keys for success, not only for for themselves, but also for the entire class.

第1回	Course overview Pronunciation exercises	Students will learn how to improve their English pronunciation skills.
第2回	Unit 4 Water	Students are responsible for completing assigned exercises for Unit 4 on the textbook. Word building in focus: adverbs Students will be asked to talk about their adventures: an interesting thing that happened the first time they tried something new.
第3回	Unit 5 A healthy life	Students are responsible for completing assigned exercises for Unit 5 on the textbook. Word in focus: describing food and taste Students will be asked to talk about what they do to stay healthy.
第4回	Unit 6 Mysteries	Students are responsible for completing assigned exercises for Unit 6 on the textbook. Grammar in focus: expressing purpose Students will be asked to talk about their unusual experience; something strange that happened to them.
第5回	Vocabulary Review Quiz	Students are responsible for reviewing all the vocabulary covered (Unit 4,5 and 6) for the quiz.
第6回	Listening Test 1 Speech (Grouip 1)	Students assigned to Group 1 will deliver a speech on a given topic. As for the listening test, all students are responsible for reviewing Unit 4 and 5.
第7回	Listening Test 2 Speech (Group 2)	Students assigned to Group 2 will deliver a speech on a given topic. As for the listening test, all students are responsible for reviewing Unit 6.

準備学修(事前学修・復習)等についての指示

学修効果を上げるため，教科書や配布資料等の該当箇所を参照し，「毎授業」授業内容に関する予習と復習（課題含む）をそれぞれ概ね100分を目安に行うこと。
