授業の目的（ねらい）、概要

この授業科目では、大学レベルでの学修・研究活動を英語で行うために必要な英語運用力のいっそうの向上を目的とした演習を行う。国際意識の醸成に資する目的で海外事情・異文化理解に関する教材を用いるほか、科学技術に関する英語素材を用いる。英語の読解力と聴解力の向上を目指す訓練に加え、口頭の発話練習および構成を考えながらパラグラフや短いエッセイを書く訓練を行うことによって、英語での発信に習熟することも目指す。

到達目標

この授業科目では、次のような英語の知識と運用力およびコミュニケーションへの姿勢を身につけることが目標となる。
・英語で自己表現する力がつく
・パラグラフや短いエッセイを書く力がつく
・英語の講義を理解する聴解力がつく
・英文を読みこなすための方法が身につく

This course will be taught by a bilingual journalist who has been reporting and writing in both English and Japanese on a wide range of issues for a variety of publications. Throughout the course, the instructor will use her knowledge and expertise in the art of storytelling, to help students acquire communication skills that are necessary for communicating ideas effectively and clearly in English to people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

授業の進め方

This course is designed to help students develop listening and speaking skills. Each week, we will explore a different issue using the textbook “Life Third Edition 4A.” Students are expected to study the unit assigned to each week and come to class fully prepared for class discussion and short speeches. Throughout the course, students will also learn to develop intercultural competence, one of the skills that are essential for collaborating with people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

第1回	Course overview Introduction to Spark, National Geographic Learning studens recources Listening and speaking exercise	During the speaking exercise, students will be asked to introduce themselves.
第2回	Unit 1 Culture and Identity	Students are responsible for completing assigned exercises for Unit 1 on the textbook. Vocabulary in focus: ideas and feelings Students will be asked to talk about their personality and cultural background.
第3回	Unit 2 Performing	Students are responsible for completing assigned exercises for Unit 2 on the textbook. Vocabulary in focus: describing emotions Students will be asked to talk about their favorite form of entertainment.
第4回	Unit 3 Opportunities	Students are responsible for completing assigned exercises for Unit 3 on the textbook. Vocabulary in focus: job, work, and education Students will be asked to talk about their goals for the future.
第5回	Vocabulary Review Quiz Lecture: How to communicate your ideas in English more effectively	Students are responsible for reviewing all the vocabulary covered (Unit 1, 2, and 3) for the quiz.
第6回	Listening Test 1 Speech (Group 1)	Students assigned to Group 1 will deliver a speech on a given topic. As for the listening test, all students are responsible for reviewing Unit 1 and 2.
第7回	Listening Test 2 Speech (Group 2)	Students assigned to Group 2 will deliver a speech on a given topic. As for the listening test, all students are responsible for reviewing Unit 3.

準備学修(事前学修・復習)等についての指示

学修効果を上げるため，教科書や配布資料等の該当箇所を参照し，「毎授業」授業内容に関する予習と復習（課題含む）をそれぞれ概ね100分を目安に行うこと。
