Syllabus

Course overview and goals

In order to become leaders in industry after completing the doctoral degree program, students must have a wide-ranging understanding not only of technology, but also of corporate strategy, finance, innovation and human capital management.

The purpose of this course is to understand how technology, social environment, policies, laws and regulations, and corporate management affect the business cases discussed. Students are required to find out from business cases what is useful or applicable in building their future careers, even if they are not necessarily related to their specialty or future career paths.
Classes are delivered in Japanese, so students should have Japanese language skills enough to understand the content of the classes.

This course is classified as a "livestream" with direct teaching by Zoom. Therefore, students are required to attend every lecture in real time. If students are unable to attend regularly due to other activities such as laboratory seminars or other lectures, do not take this course.

Prior to taking the course, please make sure that you have downloaded the latest version of the Zoom application. (Avoid connecting with browsers such as Chrome as it may be unstable or have limited functionality.) To maintain your concentration, the connected device is preferable to be the one with a larger display, such as a PC and tablet. A camera and a microphone should be available for interactive lectures.

In order to avoid being unable to attend lectures in real time once a class starts due to a poor communication environment, prior to taking the course, students must ensure an internet environment with a speed of 600 kbps/1.2 Mbps (upload/download) or higher, without worrying about data volume during lecture time.

Course description and aims

Students who take this course acquire the followings;
1) Understand of corporate strategy, finance, innovation and human capital management with case studies as essential knowledge necessary for job-hunting and building their own careers subsequently.
2) Understand how technology, the social environment, policies, rules, and corporate management affect business, based on case studies.
3) Based on 1) and 2) above, develop the ability to consider how they would think and act if they were in corporate management or business, as your own matter.
4) As being leading positions in industry in the future, realize the importance of corporate strategy, finance, innovation and human capital management and get a motivation to continue their studies even after completing the course.

Faculty members with abundant practical experience at central government offices, universities, and companies provide practical education by introducing business cases based on their own research and experience.

Class flow

Classes will be on-line via Zoom. Students are required to participate in real time in principle, in order to make sure interactivity between the lecturers and students in the class.

In classes, PowerPoint presentations will be used, with many examples and charts to facilitate understanding. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the class by joining Zoom polling, discussions, and asking questions.

An assignment will be given in each class, and students will be required to write and submit a report. The reports will be reflected in the evaluation and their contents should be something that students can refer back to in the future as they build their own careers.
Feedback on submitted reports that would be valuable for students to share will be provided at a later date, with comments from lecturers when necessary.

Course schedule/Objectives

Course schedule Objectives
Class 1 Introduction and how to understand financial statements (IZUMI Akira) Students will understand the basics of how to read corporate financial statements and will also be able to grasp the financial aspects of companies that are relevant to their career paths or in which they have an interest. Students will also understand the basic concepts of finance and profit in business. Among them, students will be able to find what is valuable or applicable to their future career development.
Class 2 Corporate business case study: House Foods Corporation (ITO Sachiko) Through case studies of R&D in House Food including discovering a new enzyme, developing onions that don't bring tears to your eyes, and winning the Ig Nobel Prize, students will understand the reality of R&D and commercialization in companies, as well as the role of doctoral researchers in companies. Students will also understand the mechanism by which R&D-driven innovation occurs in companies. Among them, students will be able to find what is valuable or applicable to their future career development.
Class 3 Semiconductor business (IZUMI Akira) Students will understand that the semiconductor business is not only related to the development of advanced technologies, but also how to raise funds and build business models, how other companies work together, and how national economic security is deeply related to competitiveness. Among them, students will be able to find what is valuable or applicable to their future career development.
Class 4 Corporate business case study: Takarazuka Revue Company (ITO Sachiko) Takarazuka Revue is an entertainment company with extremely high customer satisfaction. By considering systems for achieving high customer satisfaction from the perspective of business strategy, students will be able to acquire the perspective of appealing to users, which is also important in research activities. Among them, students will be able to find what is valuable or applicable to their future career development.
Class 5 Renewable energy business (IZUMI Akira) Through case studies of such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy, students will understand that the renewable energy business is deeply related not only to technical aspects but also to government rules and how business models are developed. Among them, students will be able to find what is valuable or applicable to their future career development.
Class 6 Corporate business case study: Keyence Corporation(ITO Sachiko) Keyence is famous as a company with extremely high profit margins. Understand from the perspective of management strategy and human resources management how the system works to consistently achieve high profit margins. Students will also be able to understand the mindset needed to realize high added value. Among them, students will be able to find what is valuable or applicable to their future career development.
Class 7 Overseas railroad business (IZUMI Akira) Students will understand the overview of public infrastructure business, profitability and various kinds of risks by taking overseas railroad business as an example. Among them, students will be able to find what is valuable or applicable to their future career development.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

No textbook. In principle, lecture materials prepared by the lecturers will be uploaded to T2SCHOLA in advance of each class.

All reference books are written in Japanese, so please refer to the syllabus in Japanese.

Evaluation methods and criteria

An assignment is given in each class and the students are required to attend it in real time, and write and submit a report on it. The reports submitted by the due date will be evaluated with the same weight for each class on how deeply they consider the assignment and how well they describe the results of their consideration.
