Course overview and goals

The course will be led by Zuse Mayer, an artist and poet from Germany.

Course description:
Each session is comprised of 2 parts. In the first part of around 40 minutes the instructor will introduce a fundamental topic of Western Art and single artist’s biography, showing slides and explaining the individual, social and cultural backgrounds and the specific power of the artworks.

In the second and larger part the students stimulated through the artworks and following simple tasks, will produce several artworks, experimenting with diverse approaches. At the end, mutual comments will raise the sensitivity towards the individual diverse expressions.

Aim:
The aim of the course is to enhance the individual creativity through learning about and practicing art.

The students will deepen their knowledge of and sensitivity toward Western Art and culture. They can experience their individual creative potential, developing unique personal ways of artistic expression.

Higher sensitivity towards Western art and culture. Openness. Courage. A fundamental first-hand-experience of the creative process.

Class 1 12/11 (wed): 13:30-16:15 (150 min) Introduction of the course - DRAWING - the meaning of the line, of a drawing, understanding the source/ the intention of creation, first practice. Using pencils. Will explain during the class
Class 2 12/18(wed) 13:30-17:05 (200 min) FORM The meaning of form, 3-dimensional space, spatial understanding. The meaning of connections and the geometry within a picture, using paper-cut and collage Will explain during the class
Class 3 1/8 (wed), 13:30-17:05 (200 min) COLOR The impact of color, single colors, color harmonies. Creating light, shadow, contrast, space , emotions through color. Using watercolors. Will explain during the class
Class 4 1/15 (wed) 13:30-17:05 (200 min) THE HUMAN FACE Portrait and self-portrait. The view on ourselves, on others. Seeing through the surface of perception. Using pastels. Final conclusion of the course. Will explain during the class

Evaluation methods and criteria

For receiving a score, minimum 3 of 4 classes should be attended. (Attendance cannot be replaced by homework) Openness towards the tasks, sincerity, diligence are most important.
