Course overview and goals

This course is for Master’s students with work experience as members of society. They obtain credit(s) and GAs (Graduate Attributes) upon certification by the graduate major to which they belong that they have already substantially satisfied GAs required for Master’s students, based on their work experience and achievement including those at past working places as members of society in the past and present.

In light of the requirements of the GAs, the course should, in principle, be taken by those who have approximately 2 years or more of work experience in companies.

The maximum number of credits that can be earned is 2 in total　(including "Master’s Recurrent Program Advanced Practice"). It is possible to obtain a total of 2 credits by taking "Master's Recurrent Program I-I of Materials Science and Engineering" and "Master's Recurrent Program I-II of Materials Science and Engineering" or 2 credits by "Master's Recurrent Program II of Materials Science and Engineering" alone. In the case that students take more than one course, the work experiences and accomplishments of the students to be certified in each course must be different from each other.

The courses are numbered as 1Q: 1, 2Q:2, 3Q:3, and 4Q:4, with two 1-credit course ("Master's Recurrent Program I-I of Materials Science and Engineering" and "Master's Recurrent Program I-II of Materials Science and Engineering"), one 2-credit course ("Master's Recurrent Program II of Materials Science and Engineering") offered in each quota (Q) .

Course description and aims

　Students with work experience as members of society can earn credits upon certification by their graduate major to which they belong that they have already substantially satisfied GAs required for Master’s students, based on their work experience and achievement as members of society in the past and present.

GA0M: You can clearly plan your own career and recognize the abilities necessary for realizing it while considering ethics and
relevance to societal problems.
GA1M: You can acquire the knowledge, skills, and ethics necessary for realizing your planned career and contribute to societal
problem-solving while collaborating with other experts.

Class flow

Students shall consult in advance with their academic supervisor regarding the preparation of documents and materials objectively proving that they have already fulfilled the GA0M and GA1M requirements based on their work experience and achievements including those at their past working places, and the number of credits expected to be obtained.

Examples of work experience and achievements that may be considered for credit in this course are as follows；
-Business experience in companies
-Activities related to standardization (*)
-Experience in charge of events, etc. that can be shown externally
-Presentations at academic conferences (*)
-Past academic conference activities, international conference organizing committee members, etc.
-Experience in writing journal articles (*)
-Review articles, commentary articles, etc. (*)
-Patent applications (*)
(*) Do not duplicate the content of the "Seminar" courses they take.

　After completing the documents and materials, students should submit them to their graduate major via their academic supervisor. Students must not just show that they have experience and accomplishments, but must explain in detail how they have acquired each item of GA0M and GA1M in their work experience and accomplishments.
　Finally, the graduate major decides whether to approve the credit earned and the number of credit(s) earned from this course based on the documents and materials submitted by the students.

　When the graduate major approved for credit and the number of credit(s), the students should register for an appropriate course in the most recent Q available for registration. Then, the academic supervisor reports grades based on that approval.

　Details of the credit approval procedure are provided separately, so please check with your academic supervisor if necessary.

　If students want to take this course at the very end of their master’s degree program, there may be no Q available. So, students should take this course early.
