Course overview and goals

This course introduces on health-related theories, remarks and observations, in order to think and judge what is good for health and to understand underlying mechanisms.

Course description and aims

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Have an understanding of basic sciences related to health-related and biological sciences.
2) Design a preferable lifestyle based on scientific evidence.
3) Using health-related knowledge, tackle practical health issues by applying knowledge acquired through this course.

Class 1 Sleep in modern society Identify various aspects of sleep problems in modern society; sleep debt, social jetlag, sleepiness, reproductive health
Class 2 Mechanisms of sleep Identify measurements of sleep and understand physical and mental states during sleep
Class 3 Biological rhythms Identify mechanisms of biological clock and circadian rhythms
Class 4 Roles of sleep Identify effects of sleep debt on physical and mental health
Class 5 Cultural and scientific findings on sleep Identify cultural and scientific aspects about consciousness in the unconscious; dreams, kanashibari, nightmares, lucid dreams
Class 6 Pathophysiology and treatment of sleep disorders Identify pathophysiology and treatment of insomnia, hypersomnia, sleep apnea, parasomnia, circadian rhythms disorder
Class 7 Strategies for good sleep Identify and practice basic strategies for good sleep in daily life
