Syllabus

Course overview and goals

In "German: Basic Course" students will read the textbook on German grammar for beginners, and practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking in German. In the "Course 4" students learn varieties of verbs and overview the grammar. With visual materials they will touch German culture and history.
During the yearlong practice, students will develop the elementary knowledge and skills needed for communication in German. In this quarter they should understand the "flame construction" of sentences, and lay the foundation of reading and practical communication. They can also acquire the understanding of foreign culture.

Course description and aims

In this course students will :
1) be able to use the infinitive.
2) understand the flame construction of German sentences.
3) learn various expressions, including euphemism.
4) overview the elementary grammar and make the basis of reading, writing and communication in German.

Class flow

Class time will be used to practice writing, reading, listening, and speaking in German with a textbook on grammar for beginners.

Class 1 The course schedule will be determined through discussions held among students and the instructor. Contents: Infinitive Separable verbs Reflexive verbs Quote representation Euphemism - Subjunctive mood Flame construction of German sentences Writing about yourself For improvement of reading skill Your instructor will direct the assignments in class.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbooks are designated by the instructor in charge in each class.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

A German-Japanese dictionary is necessary. (You can choose your comfortable dictionary.) The other materials for practice are given in the classes.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The scores are based on final (and midterm) exams (60%) and exercises in classes (40%). Details will be directed in the class by the instructor.

The enrollment in the "German: Basic Course 1, 2, 3" is desirable. You will overview the German Grammar through "German: Basic Course 1-4". In "German: Intermediate Course1-4" you can continue to develop your knowledge and skills for reading and practical communication in German.
