Course overview and goals
In this lecture, various sentences written in German are read. Students who have learned basic German grammar aim to establish their knowledge and improve their practical reading comprehension skill. The understanding to the culture of the German-speaking world will deepen through the material.

Class flow
Text materials will be provided to students in the class. (The materials are actually written by German-speaking people and are relatively plain. Grammar and vocabulary that are not learned in beginner classes are annotated.) Students will listen to the commentary, translate German sentences into Japanese, and submit a Japanese translation. In the class, the instructor will show an example of translation, explain the points of reading. We will consider the substance of the text together.

| Class 1 | We read Thomas Mann's novel. Mann says, “the more thoroughly you talk, the more interesting it becomes.” So how is it interesting? Let's read his writings. The amount of reading at one time is adjusted according to the level of understanding. There will be a total of 7 classes. Understanding concrete and clear sentences is a great way to improve your language skills. You will use your knowledge of grammar to translate German sentences into Japanese. Thomas Mann: Der Zauberberg.(1924) Vorsatz - Ankunft - Im Restaurant - Frühstück - Satana - Satana macht ehrrührige Vorschläge | Please translate the German sentence into Japanese and submit it in class. If you have a dictionary or grammar book, please bring it with you and use it. |
Study advice (preparation and review)
Through texts actually written by German-speaking people, you will understand grammar and absorb written expressions. Use beginner textbooks and reference books to review basic grammar. When you read the German-Japanese dictionary, please keep an eye on all example sentences.

Evaluation methods and criteria
Based on all submissions, the instructor will evaluate the accuracy of students' translations and reading comprehension（60％）. The results of exercises during the class (e.g., pronunciation) are also evaluated (40%).

Prerequisites
Students require the elementary knowledge of German grammar. The enrollment in the "German: Basic Course 1-4" is desirable. Students will review their basic knowledge of German grammar in the class.
