Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course is for students who have studied for the TOEFL test but are not yet confident about their knowledge. It trains students in four skills in English with special focus on reading, writing and listening skills which are required to raise their score in the Reading and Writing sections of the test and to study at universities in English-speaking environment. It also introduces students to basic study skills in English and allows them to practice them in class.

In this course students will
・understand the content and format of the Reading and Writing sections of the TOEFL tests and the strategies to answer questions in these sections.
・enhance their knowledge of different academic subjects.
・develop academic skills in English and apply them to everyday situations.

Class flow

Using the textbook, students will work on Reading/Writing exercises in the TOEFL format. There will be group work sessions, as well as some listening exercises as part of integrated writing practices.
*The number of students may be limited, so if you wish to take this course, please be sure to attend the first class.

Course Introduction/Introduction to TOEFL

Understand how the class will be conducted.
Understand the test format of TOEFL

Class 2

Reading (1): Lesson 1 (Main points/Details)

Understand the reading passage in Lesson 1 and answer the questions there correctly.
Identify the main points and details in the text.

Class 3

Writing (1): Lesson 7 (Independent Writing)
(Speaking tasks in the textbook will be used as writing tasks.)

Understand how to answer independent writing questions effectively.

Class 4

Reading (2): Lesson 2 (Summarizing 1)

Understand the reading passage in Lesson 2 and answer the questions there correctly.
Understand how to write accurate summaries.

Class 5

Writing (2): Lesson 10 (Note taking, Integrated Writing)

Understand how to answer integrated writing questions employing note-taking skills.

Class 6

Reading (3): Handouts (Summarizing 2)

Understand the reading passage provided in class and answer the questions there correctly.
Better understand how to write accurate summaries.

Class 7

Review and exam
Writing (3): Lesson 8 (Independent Writing)

Review of the overall contents of the course.
Better understand how to answer independent writing questions effectively.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
