Course overview and goals

“Oral Expression in English” courses are devoted to improving students’ skills in speaking. Apart from the context of giving presentations, effective speaking also involves effective listening, so the classwork and homework in these courses require students engaged in speech and listening exercises.

As an elective 300-level course, Oral Expression in English 11 offers a specific focus on attaining an advanced level of comprehension when watching excerpts from TV news clips, as well as oral responses to the contents of the news items in pair works and small group discussions. Objectives also include using vocabulary and grammar introduced in the classes.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to identify and, understand the key points of the issues in class and confidently discuss those points with classmates and the instructor.

Class flow

This is designed to be a student centered/interactive course with students discussing and debating on various topics. New vocabulary and grammar will be routinely introduced to enable students to articulate ideas more clearly and to facilitate discussion.

Class 1 With the assistance of handouts, students will introduce themselves to their classmates. Appropriate English vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Everyday greetings will also be taught and reinforced through role-playing and fluency exercises. Pair and group work will be utilized. Fluency/vocabulary/listening
Class 2 Education: Appropriate “Education/school” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Conversation questions (handouts) regarding “Education” will be incorporated into pair work. Students will have a chance to reinforce their new English. Education: Appropriate “Education/school” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Fluency/vocabulary/listening
Class 3 Food: Appropriate “Food” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Conversation questions (handouts) regarding “Food” will be incorporated into pair work. Students will have a chance to reinforce their new English. Fluency/vocabulary/listening
Class 4 Travel: Appropriate “travel” vocabulary and expressions will be taught and reinforced through fluency exercises (using handouts). Fluency/vocabulary/listening
Class 5 Appropriate “Family” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Conversation questions (handouts) regarding “Family” will be incorporated into pair work. Students will have a chance to reinforce their new English. Fluency/vocabulary/listening
Class 6 Appropriate “Health” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Conversation questions (handouts) regarding “ health” will be incorporated into pair work Fluency/vocabulary/listening
Class 7 Sports: Appropriate “Sports” vocabulary and expressions will be taught. Conversation questions (handouts) regarding “Sports” will be incorporated into pair work. Fluency/vocabulary/listening

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
