Course overview and goals

All of the "English Presentation Seminar" courses are designed to provide students with the tools to deliver effective presentations with confidence. As these are practice-oriented courses, students will deliver multiple presentations throughout the term. Furthermore, students will sharpen their listening skills by learning how to ask good questions and become active listeners.

As a 100-level elective course, English Presentation Seminar 3 offers the basic skills for delivering well-structured group presentations.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to give group presentations followed by a question and answer session, applying the skills and knowledge discussed in this course.

This course will be taught by a bilingual journalist who has been reporting and writing in both English and Japanese on a wide range of issues for a variety of publications. Throughout the course, the instructor will use her knowledge and expertise in the art of storytelling, to help students acquire communication skills that are necessary for presenting ideas effectively and clearly in English to people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Class flow

Each week, we will continue to explore a different presentation technique using audio lectures, readings, and discussion. Students are expected to complete all readings and come to class prepared for discussion. Students will receive instructor feedback and peer review for their presentations. The class is highly interactive. Therefore, students’ strong commitment and active participation are the keys to success, not only for themselves, but also for the entire class.

Class 1 Course introduction Using vocal variety Student will learn how to vary their voice patterns.
Class 2 Lecture and class discussion: Introducing presentations Students are responsible for reading all the handouts.
Class 3 Presentation I Students will deliver a short presentation on a given topic.
Class 4 Instructor feedback and peer review Lecture and discussion: Concluding Presenters are asked to review their own performance.
Class 5 Lecture and discussion: Delivering your message Review: Handling questions Students are expected to be able to demonstrate all the presentation techniques covered in this quarter.
Class 6 Presentation II (Group A) Students assigned to Group A will deliver a presentation on a given topic, followed by a Q&A session.
Class 7 Presentation II (Group B) Students assigned to Group B will deliver a presentation on a given topic, followed by a Q&A session.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The grade for the quarter will be determined as follows:
Class participation: 30% (Evaluation will be based on attitude, contribution, improvement, and a willingness to learn.)
Presentation I: 30%
Presentation II: 40%
