Class flow
This course is designed to improve students’ ability to understand, criticize, and discuss academic texts in English.
Students will read extracts from a book on Japanese linguistics, which explains the basics of Japanese phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. By reading academic texts in English on the Japanese language, the (native and non-native) Japanese speaking students will be able to reflect on what they subconsciously know, and to become aware of the differences of Japanese and English, which will help them have a better understanding on language in general, and enhance their experience of second language acquisition. Students are also required to participate in discussion in groups, and to write their thoughts in English.
Additional guidance and materials will be provided by the teacher.
