Syllabus

Course overview and goals

English 7 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will:
・be able to express their ideas and opinions in classes confidently
・be able to write paragraphs or short essays
・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

Apart from the first class and the last class, students are to study one and half units of the textbook each week. A short review test is set at the end of each class.

Class 3 Chapter 3: A passage about play and games (2nd half) Chapter 4: A passage about tourism To become able to write a summary of the passage in English
Class 4 Chapter 5: A passage about E-sports Chapter 6: A passage about Medicine (1st half) To become able to read English passages correctly.
Class 5 Chapter 6: A passage about Medicine (2nd half) Chapter 7: A passage about food To become able to read English passages quickly and grasp its gist.
Class 6 Chapter 8: A passage about sports and science Chapter 9: A passage about pollution (1st half) To become able to write a summary of the passage in English
Class 7 Chapter 9: A passage about pollution (2nd half) Exam General review and exam

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

The total score of weekly short tests: 40%
