Syllabus

Course overview and goals

English 7 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

By the end of this course, students will:
・be able to express their ideas and opinions in classes confidently
・be able to write paragraphs or short essays
・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

An instructor with work experience as an author and editor will provide hands-on education in writing and presenting about science, based on practice in the field that features critical thinking and logical ways of communicating information to audiences.

Class flow

We will use only English in class. Students are required to read the relevant unit and prepare in advance. Students are also required to participate in class actively. Review each unit because a review quiz will be regularly given in class.

Class 1 Orientation Unit 1: Communication Studies Students will watch a short university-level communication studies lecture and practice note-taking as well as answer questions based on the lecture.
Class 2 Unit 1: Communication Studies Unit 2: Child Psychology Students will watch short university-level communication studies and child psychology lectures and practice note-taking as well as answer questions based on the lectures.
Class 3 Unit 1 Test Unit 2: Child Psychology Students will watch a short university-level child psychology lecture and practice note-taking as well as answer questions based on the lecture.
Class 4 Unit 2 Test Unit 3: Sociology Students will watch a short university-level sociology lecture and practice note-taking as well as answer questions based on the lecture.
Class 5 Unit 3: Sociology Unit 4: Business Students will watch short university-level sociology and business lectures and practice note-taking as well as answer questions based on the lectures.
Class 6 Unit 3 Test Unit 4: Business, Unit 5: Cognitive Psychology Students will watch short university-level business and cognitive psychology lectures and practice note-taking as well as answer questions based on the lectures.
Class 7 Unit 4 Test Unit 5: Cognitive Psychology, Unit 6: Anthropology/Biology, Review Students will watch short university-level cognitive psychology and anthropology/biology lectures and practice note-taking as well as answer questions based on the lectures.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
