Syllabus
Course overview and goals
English 5 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

By the end of this course, students will:

An instructor with work experience as an author and editor will provide hands-on education in writing and presenting about science, based on practice in the field that features critical thinking and logical ways of communicating information to audiences.

Class flow
In this class, we will focus on the Reading Section of language exams such as TOEIC, and explain grammar and reading comprehension logically and carefully.
I want you to learn in two steps from Basic Practice to More Practice, and acquire the ability to deal with a wide variety of problems through a confirmation quiz at the end of each class.
In addition to answering questions, we will also incorporate stories about history and culture related to the English text.

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Make sure you have an environment where you can use an English-Japanese dictionary or an online dictionary site.
However, the Basic Practice and More Practice parts are solved quickly within a limited time, just like the actual test, and then the grammar is explained. Try to solve the question without preparing for it or using a dictionary.
Evaluation methods and criteria
20% Calculated based on prior preparation (understanding grammar, answering sample questions, creating vocabulary list) and participating in class (presenting questions in charge, participating in simultaneous answers)
30% Quiz for each chapter at the end of class
50% Final exam of the quarter
