Syllabus

Course overview and goals

In this lecture, the students appreciate major works of World Literature. The lecture will begin with an explanation of the concept of "world literature", followed by an omnibus class of literary works from different regions such as Germany, France, Russia, China, Spanish-speaking countries.
 By being exposed to major works of World Literature, students will learn how to read literary works themselves, understand the ways of thinking and the mentality of people who are geographically and historically far apart, and acquire methods of cross-cultural understanding.

In the end of this lecture, the students will be able to
1) learn how to read and enjoy literary works,
2) understand the ways of thinking and the mentality of people who are geographically and historically far apart,
3) acquire methods of cross-cultural understanding.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Students will be assessed on their commitment to the class (by response cards) (40%) and a final essay (60%).
