Course overview and goals

This class examines responsible conduct of research (research ethics), which is required for research of science and technology. Specifically, the class focuses on responsible planning and conducting research, and presenting research results, as well as professional ethics of researchers. The purpose of the class is to understand research ethics in order to conduct responsible research conduct on science and technology.

Course description and aims

Students are expected to be able to explain 1) what responsible conduct of research is; 2) what responsible planning and conducting research, and presenting research results are; and, 3) what professional ethics of researchers is.

Class 1 introduction Be able to explain what research ethics is.
Class 2 What Is a Responsible Research Activity? Read and summarise Section I of the textbook.
Class 3 Planning Research Read and summarise Section II of the textbook.
Class 4 Conducting Research Read and summarise Section III of the textbook.
Class 5 Presenting Research Results Read and summarise Section IV of the textbook.
Class 6 Professional Ethics for Researchers Read and summarise Section VIII of the textbook.
Class 7 wrap up Take e-Learning Course on Research Ethics (eL-CoRE) provided by JSPS.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Class attendance is the prerequisite for assessment. Assignments (60%) and term report (40%).
