Course overview and goals

We will provide this course for the students enrolled in the Tokyo Tech-Tsinghua University joint graduate program at Tsinghua University. This course deals with the disciplines of the fields related to Decision Science and Technology and issues in Decision Science and Technology.

This course aims to give theories and applications of public management based on practical cases in China and Japan.

Course description and aims

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1) Explain the disciplines of the fields related to Decision Science and Technology;
2) Discuss issues in Decision Science and Technology; and
3) Explain the theories and applications of Decision Science and Technology based on practical cases in China and Japan.

Class 1 1) Human, the public in human societies, and Decision Science and Technology 2) Theories of Decision Science and Technology 3) Latest topics and methodologies in Decision Science and Technology research 4) Meaning of governmental and non-governmental organizations in Decision Science and Technology 5) Theories, applications, and issues in Decision Science and Technology in Japan 6) Management of universities and administration of governments 7) Issues in public management within universities 8) Academic administration and management issues in research in universities 9) Management issues in research organizations of university professors 10) International non-governmental organization and public policy and public management Discuss public management issues given in each class.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Assessment will be based on participation in the classes (50% in total) and the final examination (50%).
