Course overview and goals

In this course the instructor introduce art theories, examining the texts written by Nicolas Bourriaud "Relational Aesthetics". Students are requested to read texts. During the courses students are required to discuss on the topic of the text. This course aims to understand problems about society and art through considering various topics. It also aims to understand the method of text reading.

Course description and aims

At the end of this course students will:
・learn the theory for analyzing visual images and contemporary art.
・understand various art works, have a critical viewpoint about visual culture and contemporary art works.
・be able to explain and comment on visual images and contemporary art works, referring theories and knowledge.

All participants are requested to read the text before the class, and have a further discussion.

Class 1 At the first class the instructor introduces the author and the book, and choose chapters that will be read with participants. Students are requested to read table of contents.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
