Course overview and goals

In September, students will go to National Central University (NCU) in Taiwan. Under the supervision of faculty members of NCU and Tokyo Tech, students are divided into groups of several members and do the field work on the urban disaster prevention against earthquake and fire. Then, each group is required to write a report and give a presentation. In the second week, each student of Tokyo Tech is required to give the presentation in the joint symposium between NCU and Tokyo Tech. Each student of Tokyo Tech is also required to submit the paper to NCU in advance.
After the symposium, all of participants from Tokyo Tech will join the site visit in Taiwan to improve the knowledge related to the disaster prevention and the infrastructures development. The period of the internship is around two weeks. Students can improve the practical expertise on the disaster prevention and the ability of international communication and cooperativeness through this international internship.

Course description and aims

By this course, each student can enhance the followings:
(1) the knowledge on the earthquake and disaster prevention through the field work.
(2) the ability of international communication and cooperativeness through the collaboration with NCU students.
(3) the ability of international communication through the presentation and discussion in English.
(4) the practical expertise on the disaster prevention through the site visit on the earthquake disasters and the infrastructures development.

Class flow

The field work will be done by groups of several members including NCU and Tokyo Tech students. In the first week, the group members are required to work together to complete the report and give the presentation. In the second week, each student from Tokyo Tech is required to give the presentation on the research work in the joint symposium. After the symposium, each student is required to join the site visit in Taiwan to enhance his/her knowledge related to the disaster prevention and the infrastructures development.

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

The overall performance of each student during the internship, such as the field work, presentation, discussion, and site visit, will be evaluated.
