Course overview and goals

Medical and welfare devices have an important role in the treatment of disease and enhancement of quality of life in the aging society. This course provides design of the medical and welfare devices considering the characteristics and emotion of human based on some actual examples.

Course description and aims

Students will understand the basic design process of medical and welfare devices from the view point of human factors and emotional design.

Class 1 Overview of medical and welfare devices Understand the history and classifications of medical and welfare devices
Class 2 Design of medical devices based on fuman factors and emotional design Understand some examples of design utilizing fuman factors and emotional design on medical devices
Class 3 Design of welfare devices based on fuman factors and emotional design Understand some examples of design utilizing fuman factors on welfare devices
Class 4 Electrically-powered active devices Understand electrification of medical and welfare devices
Class 5 Reliability engineering, Fail safe design Understand fail safe design on medical and welfare devices
Class 6 Biocompatibility design Understand biocompatibility design on medical and welfare devices
Class 7 Power transfer technology for implantable medical devices Undestarnd power transmission methods for implantable medical devices.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
