Syllabus
Course overview and goals
The first to 3rd lecture show practical examples for the reflection of the technique and results of comfort evaluation, focusing on a variety of users who will be living in cities. It is expected to understand the way of solving social and spatial problems from the point of view of human behavior and consciousness.
The 4th to 6th lecture will introduce examples of public architecture and urban public space not only in Japan but also in North & South Americas and European countries and think about ideal and sustainable public space in Japan.
The last lecture will be a discussion on the sustainable regional revitalization from point of view of the adaptive reuse of the cultural heritage and the citizens’ participation.
Course description and aims
Through this course, students will be able to:
1) Be sensitive to the characteristics of a variety of users who use the city.
2) Learn how to think the agenda-setting in the changes of social conditions.
3) Understand the problem-solving techniques in practical field.
4) Understanding role of Public Architecture in global cities

The lecture of Dr. Soeda involve the knowledge from the work experience as the director of Human Environment Design Laboratory Ltd.
The lecture of Ishida involves the knowledge from the work experience as an Architect (Principal of KIAS, ex Herzog & de Meuron Associate).
The lecture of Dr. Hiraga involve the knowledge from the work experience as monument conservator (ex. senior researcher at Cabinet office).

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.

Prerequisites
Students who have taken UDE.D405 "Sustainable Built Environment" (2 credits) in their senior year of undergraduate study in 2023 should apply for two courses, this course (1 credit) and UDE.D415 "Basics on Conservation and Preservation of Historic Environments" (1 credit) offered in the third quarter of the year, as No. 8.
