Course overview and goals

This lecture will focus on (1) the physical and chemical properties of molecules and (2) non-covalent interactions used as the tools for controlled molecular assembly. Besides such fundamental issues on organic materials science, molecular design strategies for functional materials will be described.
The aim of this lecture is to foster students' understanding of (1) fundamental properties of molecules for the design of functional organic materials, (2) the topics of organic materials that exhibit optical and electronic functional materials, (3) the properties of soft materials incuding polymers and liquid crystals. This lecture will provide students with a wide perspective of organic functional materials.

Course description and aims

At the end of this lecture, students will acquire the knowledge of (1) physical and chemical properties of organic molecules, (2) the fundamental principles of intermolecular interactions, organic structures, and functions, and (3) the relationship between organic structures and functions. Through this lecture, students will be able to understand the design of organic functional materials.
