Syllabus

Course overview and goals

The purpose of this course is to enable students who have enrolled in the "Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program" to accurately position the academic and social value of the major research results of their doctoral thesis in the overarching system (diagram) of the relevant academic field. After briefly summarizing the novelty and originality of the doctoral thesis results, the student is required to write a report on how the results contribute to the overarching system (diagram) of the relevant academic field, and the developmental potential and prospects of the research, including not only his/her own research but also common future issues in the relevant field. The prerequisite for taking this course is that the student has enrolled in the " Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program". The only difference between the four Materials Science and Engineering Special Project for Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program II 1-4 is the timing of enrollment (1Q to 4Q); overlapping enrollment is not permitted. These courses may be added to the credits required for completion of the program. It is recommended that students take 3 credits of the Materials Science and Engineering Special Project for Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program I 1-4, but it is not a prerequisite for taking these courses.

Course description and aims

・The student should be able to briefly summarize the academic and social value of the main research results of his/her doctoral dissertation, including their novelty and originality.
・The student should be able to accurately position his/her research results, which form the core of the above doctoral dissertation, within an overarching system (diagram) of the history, background, and issues of the development of the relevant academic field. In doing so, it is recommended to use the results of the Doctoral Thesis for Materials Science and Engineering Special Project for Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program I 1-4 as knowledge of the relevant academic system.
・The student should be able to summarize the above results in a logical and systematic manner in the form of a report.
・The student should be able to present the above results not in a closed form that can be understood only by those involved in the relevant academic field, but in a form of expression that can be easily understood by the general public.

Class flow

Students enrolled in the " Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program " will, based on the main research material at the time of admission, have specific discussions with their supervisors and reach agreement on whether the main research results are already sufficiently novel and original as a doctoral dissertation at the stage of further development of the research, taking into consideration its position in the relevant academic system. The student's research results should be agreed upon in specific discussions with the supervising professor. In this process, it is recommended to use the results of the Materials Science and Engineering Special Project for Accelerated Doctoral Degree Program I 1-4 as the knowledge of the related academic system. The student will briefly summarize the main results of his/her doctoral dissertation research, using or combining previously published papers or newly written papers as appropriate. The student will then summarize the academic and social value of the research in a report, and clarify the position and contribution of his/her research in the overarching system (diagram) of the relevant academic field. Students are advised by their academic supervisors to revise their reports as needed during the writing stage. The student submits the completed report to the course via the academic supervisor. After students submit their reports, the course will provide them with an opportunity to make a presentation, and credit will be granted based on a comprehensive evaluation of the report and the content of the questions raised in the presentation. Please follow the instructions of your academic advisor regarding the method of credit transfer (course registration, grade evaluation).

Evaluation methods and criteria

Based on the reports, or report and presentations submitted by the students, the course will examine whether the major research results of the doctoral dissertation of the student in question are clearly positioned in the systematization of the relevant academic field and whether their contribution is fully explained. Specifically, credit will be given based on whether the report is sufficiently valuable as the conclusion (summary) of the doctoral dissertation. This course is not graded on the basis of points, but on a pass/fail basis.
