Course overview and goals
The main purpose of this lecture "Exercise in Materials Design" is to learn the basics of physical metallurgy such as interatomic bonds, crystal structures, phase diagrams, microstructure formation which are necessary for the material design through short excise in every lecture and homework. This class is mainly open for students who have not studied metallurgy during their undergraduate (or equivalent) course at universities but who are starting their master's thesis research related to physical metallurgy. However, it is possible to take this class for the students who have studied metallurgy in their undergraduate course but want to understand much deeper.
Since this class provides excise, the number of acceptable students is limited. Then, the applicants must read the following requirements and contact to Prof. Hosoda by via email to hosoda.h.aa@m.titech.ac.jp in advance before registration. When the applicant number exceeds the capacity, selection for the permission will be made. This lecture is provided in both Japanese and English. However, if a student cannot understand either Japanese or English at all, in this case, he/she has to ask Prof. Hosoda before the registration. Besides, since this lecture handles advanced materials science and physical metallurgy as a graduate course, the following students are not recommended to take this class: (1) they have not studied metallurgy at all, (2) they are currently starting their master's thesis research in their laboratories, or (3) he/she does not want to study physical metallurgy strongly if their major is different from physical metallurgy at present. The applicant students are required to take the class "Exercise in Physical Metallurgy" in 1Q together.
Course description and aims
To understand the essence of interatomic bonding and crystal structures in metallic materials, and the relationships to phase diagrams, solid solubility of additional elements from the viewpoint of free energy, and microstructural formation through phase reactions in the phase diagrams for the design of metallic materials.

Class flow
After the short exercise, the way how to consider is provided. Homeworks are also provided. The students are divided in several groups for the group work. The students have to use calculators (including PC), rulers, grid paper, data books and so on. However, using camera (with or without smart phone), internet and AI are not permitted.

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Prerequisites
Due to the effective excise and limitation of room, there is a limitation of the maximum number of students. Then, applicants must contact to Prof. Hosoda by noon three days before the first lecture: to email hosoda.h.aa@m.titech.ac.jp with the information of their major in undergraduate course and present supervisor(s). If the number of applicant students is too much, the students whose master/doctor course research is related to metallurgy have a priority to take this class. The applicants are strongly recommended to take "Exercise in Physical Metallurgy" in 2Q together. If the applicants have any questions, contact to Prof. Hosoda prior to the application. This lecture is provided in Japanese and English, however, if the students who do not understand Japanese at all, he/she has to ask to Prof. Hosoda before the registration of this lecture.

The students taking this class must take the class "Excise in physical metallurgy" together. If the number of applicants exceeds the capacity, permission is preferentially provided for the graduate students whose master or doctor course research is related to metallurgy. Undergraduate students may be accepted when vacancies. Research students cannot take this class. This lecture is provided in both Japanese and English. However, if the student cannot understand Japanese or English at all, he/she must contact to Prof. Hosoda by email hosoda.h.aa@m.titech.ac.jp with the experience of learning physical metallurgy.
