Course overview and goals

[Summary of the course] In this course, nucleophilic additions of aldehydes and ketones, synthesis and reactions of carboxylic acids and nitriles together with acidity and nucleophilic acyl substitution, and alfa-substitution of carbonyl compounds based on tautomerism will be explained.
[Aim of the course] Students learn that many useful compounds can be synthesized by utilizing characters of carbonyl groups. Also students can acquire ability to discuss reaction mechanisms (organic electron theory).

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students acquire the following abilities to:
(1) Explain nucleophilic additions of aldehydes and ketones with showing movement of electrons.
(2) Explain synthesis and reactions of carboxylic acids and nitriles as well as acidity.
(3) Explain synthesis and reactions of carboxylic acid derivatives based on chemistry of carboxylic acids and nucleophilic acyl substitution.
(4) Explain alfa-substitution of carbonyl compounds based on tautomerism.

Keywords

carbonyl groups, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, nitriles, acyl halides, carboxylic acid anhydrides, esters, amides, nucleophilic addition, nucleophilic acyl substitution, alfa-substitution, tautomerism, enolate ions

Competencies

  • Specialist skills
  • Intercultural skills
  • Communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

This course will proceed in the following order: (1) aldehydes and ketones based on nucleophilic additions, (2) carboxylic acids and nitriles together with acidity, (3) carboxylic acid derivatives and nucleophilic acyl substitution, and (4) carbonyl alfa-substitution. In the last day, practice problems and
interpretation of them will be carried out to confirm the level of understanding.

Course schedule/Objectives

Course schedule Objectives
Class 1 Aldehydes and ketones: Nucleophilic addition, Protection and deprotection Explain nucleophilic addition to aldehydes and ketones. Explain protection and deprotection of carbonyl groups
Class 2 Aldehydes and ketones: conjugate addition Carboxylic acid: acidity, Synthesis and reactions Explain protection and deprotection of carbonyl groups, and conjugate addition. Explain acidity, synthesis and reactions of carboxylic acids.
Class 3 Nitriles: Synthesis and reactions Carboxylic acid derivatives: synthesis Explain synthesis and reactions of nitriles. Explain synthesis of carboxylic acid derivatives from carboxylic acids
Class 4 Carboxylic acid derivatives: Nucleophilic acyl substitution Explain nucleophilic acyl substitution.
Class 5 Carbonyl alfa substitution: keto-enol tautomerism, enolate ions Explain keto-enol tautomerim of carbonyl compounds. Explain preparation of enolate ions.
Class 6 Carbonyl alfa substitution: alkylations of enolate ions Explain alkylation reactions of enolate ions.
Class 7 Practice problems and interpretation for confirming the level of understanding Solve practice problems by accurate understanding of the above all lectures.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
