Syllabus

Course overview and goals

[Summary of the course] In this course, an overview of organic reactions, structure/reactivity/synthesis of alkenes, structure/reactivity/synthesis of alkynes, and retrosynthetic analysis will be explained for the students who studied Organic Chemistry I (Alkanes) (Chemical Science and Engineering).
[The aim of the course] As unsaturated hydrocarbons are the important organic compounds which are used as starting materials for various functional materials and biologically active substances, it is extremely important to understand the chemistry of these classes of compounds. In this course, at first, students understand classification of organic reactions based on the reaction mechanism. Next, students understand structures, reactions, and synthesis of the alkenes and alkynes. Finally, students understand the basis for the planning method of the synthesis of organic compounds by the retrosynthetic analysis.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will acquire the following abilities to:
(1) Understand the classification of the reactions based on the reaction mechanism.
(2) Understand structure/reactivity/synthesis of alkenes.
(3) Understand structure/reactivity/synthesis of alkyne.
(4) Understand nature and reactivity of conjugated compounds.
(5) Make a plan for the synthesis of organic compounds.

Class flow

This course will proceed in the following order: (1) overview of organic reactions, (2) alkenes, (3) alkynes, (4) conjugated compounds and retrosynthetic analysis. In the last day, practice problems and interpretation of them will be carried out to confirm the level of understanding.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Practice problems and interpretation for confirming the level of understanding (90%), level of class participation (10%) (The level of class participation will be calculated by discussion, small examination and so on in the lecture.)
