Course overview and goals

The aim of this course is to understand and think about the ethical issues faced as a science and technology engineer who will get a job in a company after graduation, by using the specific examples described in outcomes of the lecture. The instructor will explain how important good faith and honesty are for scientists and engineers.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to learn about the following issues,

Preparation for members of society
Attitude as a scientist
How to select R & D themes and how to proceed
Manufacturing company organization
Work of the engineer in manufacturing companies
Japanese employment form and the role of the engineer in it
Concept of safety management
Copyright and respect for it
Cases of scandals involving engineers
Think about ethics as a science and technology engineer

Class 2 To become a member of society Explain how to become a member of society.
Class 3 Work of engineers in manufacturing companies Explain the profit structure of manufacturing companies and the work of the engineer.
Class 4 Japanese-style employment and company organization Explain membership-type employment and where the engineer is assigned.
Class 5 How to choose a company Provide information to help you choose a company.
Class 6 Examples of research misconduct Introduce scandals and research misconduct.
Class 7 Science and technology engineer ethics Consider the engineer's ethics with an example of a senior staff member.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
