Syllabus

Course overview and goals

Affect may occur as individual experiences. However, in contexts with multiple persons, affect may play social rolls such as media or information. This class try to explore how affect may work in social contexts.

Course description and aims

Students are expected to explore various meanings of affects in social context through group and class discussions. Students learn the fundamental knowledge on affect and related topics, but this class does not emphasize learning the knowledge. Rather, students are encourage to broaden and deepen the considerations on affect in different contexts from what they have ever considered.

Lecturer has some work experiences in a workplace at a private company. That experience reinforces the arguments about workplace management in this class.

Class 3 Emotional contagion Understand the concept of emotion contagion and its meaning in social context.
Class 4 Network intelligence Understand the role of affective information in network intelligence.
Class 5 Empathy Discuss and understand the concept of empathy
Class 6 Emotional intelligence Understand the concepts of emotional intelligence, and consider its meaning in society.
Class 7 Social and Emotional Learning Understanding concept of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
Class 8 Social and Emotional Learning: Exercise Practice Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
Class 9 Affect and trust Consider the relations between affect and how human trust on human.
Class 10 Emotion and group behavior Understand the role of emotion on group behavior.
Class 11 Affective Climate in workplace Understand the relations between affect shared in workplaces and objective / subjective evaluation of the workplace.
Class 12 Social capital and affect Understanding fundamentals of social capital concept and its relation with affect.
Class 13 Affect and social norm Consider the role of affect on maintenance of social norm.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
