Course overview and goals

Students will learn theories and methods that enable to consider the emotional response of users when designing artifacts.

Course description and aims

Basic knowledge of the theories underlying various design methods and ways for applying them will be acquired.

Class flow

Theories and methods are first explained and discussed. Then, students try to apply them to design practice.

Course schedule/Objectives

Class 1 (Basic lectures followed by PBL) Week 1: Emotional design in product design, arch. design and engineering Week 2: Presentation and discussion of examples selected by students Week 3: Emotional design based on Norman’s three-level model Week 4: Application of Norman's model to examples selected by students Week 5: Affective Engineering based on Nudge theory Week 6: Group work on final project Week 7: Presentation and discussion of final projects Complexity of the relationships between artifacts and emotion would be learned.

Study advice (preparation and review)

For effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments), for each class. They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course materials.
