Syllabus
Course overview and goals
Students are assigned to laboratories of Department of electrical and electronic engineering and have experience of research projects in order to understand the actual aspects of scientific research in each specialized academic field, which would rise up a wide range of interest in scientific and engineering researches. In order to become active as engineers and scientists in the future, we have to understand sufficiently the influence of science on society, and study the true nature of scientific research and of the proper comportment of a principled investigator (that is Science and Engineering Ethics).
Each student will experience two laboratories in Okayama-campus and Suzukakedai-campus one by one to expand their perspectives on research fields and help deepen the diversity of human interactions.
In the laboratory, students will learn social and academic significance of the research and basic concepts and specific methodology of each field. Science and engineering ethics is studied by watching e-Learning Course on Research Ethics (eL CoRE) provided by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Students are requested to summarize the report on how to apply what we learned from science and technology ethics to laboratory activities after belonging to the laboratory.
The student conducts research on a theme determined through suggestions and discussions with his/her academic supervisor.
The student will learn basic concepts, methodology of analysis, experiments and discussion through the process for solving specific problems in the laboratory. Finally, the student will make a report document and presentation of the findings and discussions obtained from the research project.
This course situates prior to the research project for Bachelor's thesis, which acts important role to associate course works based on a structured curriculum with specific research activities in laboratories. It is expected that the student will increase knowledge in his/her field and that he/she will acquire comprehensive skills to identify and develop solutions that will solve new and unsolved problems.
Course description and aims
By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1) Understand and explain the purpose, methodology as well as principle and significance of the research in the specific field.
2) Acquire specific methodology such as experimental and analytical skills related to the research field.
3) Acquire skills of logical thinking, discussion and writing.
4) Make effective presentations of the research.
5) Acquire skills of understanding the cases where science and technology affect society, and to make decisions as a party's position. Acquire abilities to explain the promotion of fair research, norms and rules concerning misconduct, etc.

Class flow
Conduct laboratory work under the guidance of your academic supervisor. The course schedule is determined through discussions with your academic supervisor. Science and Engineering Ethics is studied by watching e-Learning Course on Research Ethics (eL CoRE) provided by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Students are requested to make a report document.
