Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course focuses the fundamentals on the design processes of systems. Students design and make the remote controlled machine which will be used to solve the given subject. The subject is given in the first class, and the presentations on the concept of the machine are made by students in the 4th class. The contest of the machines made by students is held as the final presentation in the last class.
In this lecture basic knowledge to design and construct cyber-physical systems is studied. Since importance of the cyber-physical systems becomes bigger and bigger in a society, basic properties and limitations of materials, sensors, and actuators should be understood to realize cyber-physical systems whose basic systems are mechatronics systems though it is also important to design the systems with creativity. In this lecture students study about basic knowledges to desin and construct mechatronics systems and to study each topic deeply.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand about mechatronics systems.
2) Understand material, actuators, and sensors for mechatronics systems.
3) Design and construct mechatronics systems.

Class 4 Basic design(2): Design steps and process Each design step and its process are studied.
Class 5 Selection of materials and design (2) Material properties, strength, and how to select them are studied.
Class 6 Transmission mechanisms Structures of transmission mechanisms and how to select them are studied.
Class 7 Actuators and their properties Principles of actuators and their properties are studied.
Class 8 Making of chassis parts Preparation of drawing the draft of chassis parts
Class 9 Presentation of design How to make a presentation of design using CAD is studied.

Class 13 Exploration to a real mechatronics system (1) Learn about a real mechatronics system produced by a company.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The performance of the machines made by students, presentations on their machines, and the results of the contest will be used for the assessment of students’ knowledge on fundamentals of the design processes, and their creativeness.
