Course overview and goals
"Physics of strongly correlated electron systems"
Lecturer: Prof. Norio Kawakami (Ritsumeikan University)
In this lecture, I will provide an introductory course on the theoretical treatment of strongly correlated electron systems, one of the central issues in condensed matter physics. First, I will give an overview of the Kondo effect, a typical example of many-body effects that manifests itself in various quantum phenomena. As an application of the Kondo effect to itinerant systems, I will discuss the dynamical mean field theory, which is widely used to analyze strongly correlated phenomena, and discuss the Mott transition. I will then turn to one-dimensional correlated electron systems, a prototypical example with large quantum fluctuations, and explain the exact solution based on Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory that describes the universal properties at the low energy region. Using these methods, I will discuss the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in one-dimensional systems, and explain its applications to experiments. If time allows, I will also touch on topological phenomena in strongly correlated systems as a recent topic.
