Course schedule/Objectives

Course schedule Objectives
Class 1 Reaction rate, rate constant, rate equation Write down the rate equation using the rate constant
Class 2 Reaction order, molecularity of reaction Explain reaction order and molecularity of the reaction
Class 3 first order reaction, second order reaction Solve the rate equation of first order reaction and second order reaction
Class 4 Consecutive reaction, pseudo-first order reaction, Steady-state approximation Explain consecutive reaction and pseudo-first order reaction, and solve the rate equation by using steady-state approximation
Class 5 Transition state theory Explain transition state theory
Class 6 Collision theory and collision cross section Obtain the root mean square velocity of gases using the collision cross sections and Boltzmann distribution.
Class 7 Reaction cross section of bimolecular reaction Give the relation between the reaction cross section and the rate constant of bimolecular reaction

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

Course materials are provided during class.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Physical Chemistry 8/e (Oxford University Press)

Evaluation methods and criteria

Full attendance and completion of all exercises are compulsory. Students will be assessed on their understanding and commitment of each class and the final exam.
