Course overview and goals

This is a lecture of mathematics (especially, linear algebras) that is indispensable for those who study chemistry.
The goal is to fully understand mathematical techniques to calculate complicated vector formula, to solve eigenvalue and orthogonalization problem of matrixes and to treat operator algebras, as well as their physical and chemical meanings.

Course description and aims

The goal is to understand the meaning of each topics on mathematics and to fully put them to use as tools for study of chemistry.

Keywords

Complex functions, Fouriertransform, Laplace transform

Competencies

  • Specialist skills
  • Intercultural skills
  • Communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Each class consists of outline of basic topics, explanation of exercise problems, and introduction of related topics. Students are required to learn outside of the classroom for preparation and review purposes under the instructor's guidance.

Course schedule/Objectives

Course schedule Objectives
Class 1 Vector space Understand the linear combination of vectors and their component representation, and can treat complicated vector formula
Class 2 Determinant Understand properties of the determinant and can calculate the determinant of any matrix
Class 3 Matrix algebra Can calculate inverse matrix Understand properties of orthogonal matrix
Class 4 Eigenvalue problem Can calculate eigenvalues and eigen vectors
Class 5 Orthogonalization of matrix Can orthogonalize matrix and can apply to orthogonalization of quadratic form
Class 6 Linear operator algebra Understand the relationship between linear operators and matrixes
Class 7 Application to quantum mechanics Understand differences between wave functions and state vectors

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
