Course overview and goals
This course focuses on measurements of health-related indexes by students themselves, and covers the fundamentals of health sciences.
Students will measure and observe physiological and psychological responses to physical exercise.
The approaches/methods are not only useful for health sciences, but applicable to study disciplines dealing with humans (e.g., mechanical engineering, life science) .
Course description and aims
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) acquire the ability to assess health-related indexes in humans, by using physiology, biomechanics and psychology.
2) have an understanding of background mechanisms of health.
Keywords
physiology, biomechanics, psychology
Competencies
- Specialist skills
- Intercultural skills
- Communication skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Practical and/or problem-solving skills
Class flow
In most classes, students measure several indexes or practice, write short reports, and submit them immediately before the end of the class.
Attendance is taken in every class.
Course schedule/Objectives
Course schedule | Objectives | |
---|---|---|
Class 1 | Body fat mass | Measure student's own fat mass and understand the significances in fat mass and its measurement. |
Class 2 | Circuit training and the examination of heart rate | Understand the exercise intensity and recovering potential by practicing circuit training and examining heat rate |
Class 3 | Eenrgy balance (assessment of energy intake and consumption) | Assess energy intake by food intake and energy consumption by physical activity, and understand their meanings. |
Class 4 | Assessment of maximal oxygen uptake (stamina) (Exercise) | Assess student's own maximal oxygen uptake by using cycle ergometer. |
Class 5 | The practice of resistance training | Understand the manner of resistance training |
Class 6 | Understanding of sarcopenia and group study | Understand descriptively the sarcopenia and talk with each other to prevent this |
Class 7 | Prevention of sarcopenia by simple training with chair | Understand the sarcopenia and preventing approach by simple training with chair |
