Course overview and goals
This course is for students who do not know much about or have never taken the TOEFL test. The course introduces students to its content and format as well basic vocabulary necessary so that they will be able not only to familiarize themselves with the test format but also study in academic institutions with English-speaking environment for a short period of time.
Course description and aims
・Students will understand the content and format of the TOEFL test.
・Students will improve their listening and speaking skills through interactive pair and group activities in class.
・Students will be able to understand a short speech or conversations and to summarize and explain orally its main content in simple sentences in English.

Class flow
The goal of this class is to help students improve their speaking and listening skills through training for the TOEFL iBT test. Students will practice expressing themselves in English and understanding practical and academic English by taking practice tests in the official TOEFL guidebook, and by participating in conversational activities. The class will be conducted half in English, half in Japanese, which will accustom students to listening to lectures in English.

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria
Attendance at the first class is compulsory for students planning to take this course.
Class participation: 50% (Based on attitude, contribution, and improvement)
Speaking test: 20%
Listening test: 30%
