Syllabus

Course overview and goals

Based on English 7, English 8 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

By the end of this course, students will:
・be able to express their ideas and opinions in classes confidently
・be able to write paragraphs or short essays
・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

Students are required to read the textbook and answer the exercise questions before the class. In the classroom, we will check contents of the passage and answers to the questions, and mini tests will be given to review the previous lesson. In addition, students will be acquired to submit assignments.

Class 2 UNIT 7 TECHNOLOGY Artificial Intelligence: The Turning Point Understand the text in UNIT 7 and answer to the questions correctly. Practice listening writing skills, discuss related topics and give a presentation about them in English and acquire skills.
Class 3 UNIT 8 POLITICAL SCIENCE Big Brother and the Surveillance Society Understand the text in UNIT 8 and answer to the questions correctly. Practice listening writing skills, discuss related topics and give a presentation about them in English and acquire skills.
Class 4 UNIT 9 LINGUISTICS Animal Communication Understand the text in UNIT 9 and answer to the questions correctly. Practice listening writing skills, discuss related topics and give a presentation about them in English and acquire skills.
Class 5 UNIT 10 ECONOMICS The Evolution of Money Understand the text in UNIT 10 and answer to the questions correctly. Practice listening writing skills, discuss related topics and give a presentation about them in English and acquire skills.
Class 6 UNIT 11 BIOLOGY The Fountain of Youth Understand the text in UNIT 11 and answer to the questions correctly. Practice listening writing skills, discuss related topics and give a presentation about them in English and acquire skills.
Class 7 Review / Exam Review the overall content of the course.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
