Course overview and goals

This course is designed to enhance the students' knowledge of the history of information technology by exposing them to literature in the field of the history of technology. As a highly regarded book, "Open Standards in the Digital Age" by Andrew L. Russell (Cambridge University Press, 2014) will be the primary focus of the course. The book provides a comprehensive examination of the evolution of communication technology, from the telegraph to the Internet, from the perspective of the history of standards such as TCP/IP.

The objectives of the course are twofold:

To deepen the students' understanding of the history of information technology.
To teach historical ways of thinking and research methodologies through examples from the history of technology.

2. To develop the ability to think and investigate in a historical manner.

Students are required to give a brief summary of the portion of the book they have read during each class. Each student is expected to make at least one presentation.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
