Syllabus

Course overview and goals

The first half of the course will examine the historical background of urban planning through an explanation of the social background, urban vision, and urban planning methods.
The second half will focus on specific urban problems and examine the structure of the problems and solutions from various perspectives through fieldwork and group discussions.

Course description and aims

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1.Explain the history and idea of urban planning.
2.Explain the variety and meaning of the framework of urban planning and its inherent issues based on historical documents and site visits.

Class flow

This class meets once a week for 7weeks.
The first three lectures will focus on the history of urban planning, combining the social background of each period with urban problems and their solutions. The second four sessions will focus on specific urban problems, with group discussions on why such urban problems are occurring now and how they can be solved.

Class 5 Field Research Understanding of urban problems in the target area
Class 6 Group Discussion Group discussions on specific urban issues
Class 7 presentation Presentations based on group discussions

Study advice (preparation and review)

Preparation is not required.
After class, student are encouraged to deepen discussion of city, urban problems, and keywords on them presented in class.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The first half:Participation and contribution to class discussions
The second half:Group presentation
Total= average of the first and second half grades
