Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This lecture is given by a part-time lecturer. This lecture is intended to help students realise that the act of design, through the design of bridges, is a creative task that seeks to create a structure that is in harmony with the surrounding environment.

Course description and aims

1. master the fundamentals of structural design
2. understand the various roles of structural design
3. understand how to develop specific ideas through exercises
4. develop creativity and communication skills through proposals, models and presentations

Lectures are based on specific design processes, drawing on national and international bridge design experience.

Class flow

After guidance and lectures by the lecturer, each student practices designing a pedestrian bridge and creates a model and a proposal. In the final lecture, they present their models and proposals, which are then critiqued by the lecturer.

Class 1 Guidance on bridge and structural design. Significance of this course, what is civil engineering and bridge design?
Class 2 Fundamentals of bridge construction and design. Bridge design and structural mechanics, and how to understand road bridge specifications.
Class 3 Bridge design practice. Introduction of lecturers' achievements (in some cases, lectures by guest lecturers)
Class 4 Examples of pedestrian bridge design International case studies
Class 5 Pedestrian bridge design exercise 1 Considering footbridge design in certain locations.
Class 6 Pedestrian bridge design exercise 2 Considering footbridge design in certain locations.
Class 7 presentation convey a message in an easy-to-understand manner

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
