Course overview and goals
[Summary of Lecture] This lecture will focus on topics about flow operation and distillation process and each topic consists of 4 classes. In piping design and flow control, topics include pipeline design, pipeline fabrication, and piping project contest. Topics in “distillation operation” include experiments using vapor-liquid equilibrium distilling apparatus in methanol-water system, vapor-liquid equilibrium calculation and calculation for theoretical stages of continuous rectification column.
[Aim of Lecture] The concept of modeling, simulation, evaluation and optimization for process design is essential in the field of chemical engineering. This lecture aims for students to understand the concept of chemical engineering design related to the flow operation and distillation. In order to develop student’s creativity, students are divided into small teams and their results are evaluated in the process contest.
Course description and aims
At the end of this course, students will be able to design chemical process project related to the flow operation and distillation with certain design constraints to acquire the ability to solve chemical engineering problems with multiple answers. Students will have the chance to tackle practical problems using both experimental study and computer simulation and to obtain the ability to improve the design by not merely trial and error methodology but by applying knowledge acquired through chemical engineering course.

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
