Course overview and goals

Learn concrete examples and prospects from the fundamental science based on the latest research topics in the field of materials and chemical engineering, mainly focusing on freshmen from the School of Materials and Chemical Engineering. It aims at acquiring the attitude of study learning by gathering information themselves. Additionally, it also aims to explore future career path through introduction of Interdisciplinary Graduate Majors, Doctoral Programs for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education (WISE programs), and lectures by famous alumni.

Class flow

This lecture is an omnibus format by four faculty teachers and introduces the latest research topics in Materials and Chemical Engineering as an example. This lecture also introduces Interdisciplinary Graduate Majors, WISE programs, and science and research topics by famous alumni, has group discussion of each topic at latter half of the lecture.

Class 1 Is Earth an iron planet?–Materials Science for sustainable society– Describe in one page how you contribute to SDGs as materials scientist science that deploys theoretical calculations and artificial intelligence technology.
Class 2 Development of inorganic materials using supercomputers Understand the development of inorganic materials based on "materials informatics", a new paradigm in materials science that deploys theoretical calculations and artificial intelligence technology.
Class 3 Common polymers in our daily life. Understand the synthesis, structure, and property of polymers in the introductory class. In particular, understand the common polymers in our daily life.
Class 4 The Past, Present, and Future of Rubber This lecture provides an overview of the basics of rubber and its applications in the past, the present, and the near future. The course will also deepen students' understanding of the intense microscopic motions occurring within the rubber materials.
Class 5 Introduction of Interdisciplinary Graduate Majors (Energy Science and Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, and Human Centered Science and Biomedical Engineering) and WISE programs (Tokyo Tech Academy for Convergence of Materials and Informatics, and Tokyo Tech Academy of Energy and Informatics) Understand whole academic programs of School of Materials and Chemical Technology.
Class 6 Lectures and panel discussion by famous alumni Understand the future career path through lectures and panel discussion by famous alumni.
Class 7 Summery and discussion with academic supervisors Summarize the lecture and discuss with academic supervisors.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
