Syllabus
Course overview and goals
This course is aimed at the intermediate level students who have finished Japanese Kanji: Intermediate 3 (or those who have studied about 500 kanji). Students are expected to expand their kanji vocabulary, the knowledge of kanji system and skills for recognizing kanji through reading activities using various Japanese articles. Students are also expected to achieve their autonomous kanji learning through this course.
Course description and aims
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) pronounce and understand various kanji combination words used at the intermediate level and N2 level of JLPT;
2) catch the main idea of sentences (e.g. advertisements, manuals, documents, newspaper articles, etc.) using kanji words as a clue;
3) guess the pronunciation and the meaning of kanji combination words which they have not seen before;
4) expand their knowledge of kanji vocabulary.

Class flow
At each class, students will learn 6 new kanji used in various vocabulary and acquire the knowledge of kanji and skills for actual usage through reading activities. Students are given assignments in every class, and are required to take the final exam.

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 30-60minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Students are required to attend more than 60% of the scheduled classes to take the final exam.

Prerequisites
Only for international students whose Japanese proficiency is equivalent to intermediate level, having knowledge of 500 kanji . Applicants who have not taken Japanese kanji: Intermediate 3 are required to take kanji level test. This course is for students who do not use kanji in their first language.
