Course overview and goals

In the age of the climate change, we have to face environmental crisis in order to create the sustainable future. What's happening on the earth. By researching the goal 13(Global Warming), 14(Ocean ecosystem), 15(Land ecosystem) of SDGs: Sustainable Development Goals, we will understand the situation. What we can do through our way of living and the professional study. We will experience the work that reconnect for building the foundation for change.
The aim of this course is to understand the environmental issues, and to facilitate students to act forward.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1)have an understanding of today's situation as a great turning in front of environmental crisis.
2)realize the new concept of life sustain society instead of industrial growth society for our sustainable future.

Class flow

Participatory learning based on group work. It is easy to forget by just listening, but it is well learned by studying and finding by myself. So we try to make a collaborative leaning community based on home group of 4 people.
(In case of online, we use breakout session of zoom to make small groups.)

Class 1 Orientation, What are happening today's world, and Sustainable future. Overview of the work that reconnects. Reflection, and writing a mini report.
Class 2 Making the relation map which focus on the discovery of interdependence of the world. Reflection, and writing a mini report.
Class 3 SDG's:United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals 1 Research on Goal 13, and writing a report.
Class 4 SDG's:United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals 2 Research on Goal 14, and writing a report.
Class 5 NGOs' view of Environmental issues of Japan and the world. Research on Goal 15, and writing a report.
Class 6 NGOs' view of poverty and social issues of Japan and the world. Reflection of the first half, and writing a report.
Class 7 Reflection of the first half by sharing the reflection report. Considering what we can do for Global Environmental issues. Reflection
Class 8 The work that reconnects 1 Interconnectedness of all beings. Reflection
Class 9 The work that reconnects 2 Council of all beings. Reflection
Class 10 The work that reconnects 3 Mindfulness. Preparation for the presentation.
Class 11 Student’s presentation about action plan. Preparation for the presentation.
Class 12 Student’s presentation about action plan. Preparation for the presentation.
Class 13 Student’s presentation about action plan. Writing a final report.
Class 14 Conclusion by sharing final reports. Reviewing of the all classes and writing final report.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Active participation of the class and group work and homework:70%, Middle and Final report: 30%
