Syllabus
Course overview and goals
This course focuses on theories and practices of regional and transport planning. Planning system and process for spatial plan and urban infrastructure plan are both emphasized and taught comprehensively in this course.
1) Principles of planning and planning systems in Japan and some other countries, 2) Fundamentals of planning theory and planning process, 3) Theory and practice of public involvement and citizen participation, 4) Historical overview and future perspective of infrastructure development, and 5) Transport Network and Infrastructure Planning for Road, Bicycle, LAMAT, Railway and Air Transport are covered in this class.
This course discusses on how to manage the planning process in regional planning and transport network planning, in conjunction with public communication which is being essential in the planning process. It is described that taking a proper planning process from the beginning enables people and the society to avoid unnecessary conflicts and to raise their consciousness to public-minded issues surrounding their living environment.
Course description and aims
By completing this course successfully, students will be able to:
1) understand fundamental elements of planning system in Japan and foreign countries,
2) explain briefly ideas of planning process, citizen participation and public involvement based on the understanding of their theories and practices.
3) understand several conditions of planning the transport system such as road, railway and air transport.

Class flow
Students should download and preview lecture material in advance from Web. Students are requested to review the planning system and process of foreign countries. In addition, students are split into groups in the second half of the class as usual in order to design a planning process. In this year, students might be requested to propose a planning concept or design in the field of region and transport. Problems are assigned in lecture as needed.

Student's course score is based on individual report (50%), individual (group) exercise (20%) and individual (group) presentation (30%).
