Course overview and goals

"Medical bioengineering" is an engineering system for developing technologies to be useful for medical use by using biotechnology techniques. Medical fields to be applied are various diseases including lifestyle diseases such as cancer. In the lecture, students learn the basics in developing materials and technologies to be applied to human beings, and also learn about diagnostic technology using imaging and biomarkers, and drug development such as regenerative medicine, biopharmaceuticals, drug delivery system, and anti-cancer drugs.

Course description and aims

Students will acquire the following knowledge by taking Medical bioengineering lectures.
1) Fundamentals of biotechnology for medical applications
2) Allergy and antibody
3) Lifestyle-related disease and antibody diagnosis
4) Lifestyle-related disease and cardiovascular health
5) Fundamentals and applications of drag delivery system
6) Fundamentals and applications of biosensing

Keywords

Biomaterial, Pharmacokinetics, Imaging probe, Drug delivery system, Biosensing, Lifestyle-related diseases, Allergy, Cancer

Competencies

  • Specialist skills
  • Intercultural skills
  • Communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

The lecture will be carried out using PPT, and the subject quiz test will be carried out at the end of lecture. Please read the lecture materials distributed beforehand in OCWi and prepare.
This lecture is all done in English, but there are cases where an overview is introduced in Japanese as necessary.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

None

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Distribute the materials at the beginning of the lecture as necessary, and explain using Power point. The power point used for the lecture is uploaded to the OCWi in advance, so use it for preparation / review.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Impose assignment quiz after each lecture. Decide the grade based on the results of the quiz. No report after lectures.
If your quiz reports are found to contain material plagiarized from literature, including the Internet, your grade will be marked zero,
